Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

. re: "I will give you a short not of our trials and trubells since we left Nashville[.]" He also reports that there next stop is in Texas, 900 miles away by water "and that is the way we will go[.]" He reports on hot weather and poor health, but also that he has been recommended for 2nd Lieutenant. He stops his letter as a result of sickness which he reports in his conclusion written the 15th.
