Writes about detailing an orderly to help him with his paperwork. Instead of helping, the orderly left names off of the roll call and spilled two bottles of ink. Written from "Carolina City," most likely in North Carolina.
Carolina City Apl 7 '62 Dear All, First Lieut. E.H. Ripley goes to Connecticut tomorrow morning & I send by him my "secesh" Flute & a few Hatteras shells. I am very sorry I did not know of his proposed trip sooner & I would have tried to pick up more to send. I had in my carpet bag several little curiosities which were of course lost with it. I sometimes think everything was in that said bag. Ripley was formerly a member of Capt ward S Co. & was promoted & transferred to Co. C. he leaves for Connecticut to recruit for the Regt & I hope he may be successful & soon return to us as he is a very valuable officer & a real worker. I am now fairly at my work again & find "lots" of it to do. Detailed an orderly to day to assist me & set him at work copying the muster Rolls of Field & staff which had been spoilt by water getting into my Regt chest. I gave him a perfect one to copy from & then corrected his first copy & then left him to write three more. He was at it all the P.M. & then brought them to me & he had left out one name on all three & so they were good for nothing. He also managed to spill two bottles of ink a rather scarce article just now. I looked them over & thanked him & said I would let him know when I wanted him again. There is no news here. Ripley's leaving is an entire secret. I wrote you a monstrous long letter yesterday which I suppose went to Newburn this morning. Good night dear ones. Love to all & everybody Chas
