He feels unsure about her showing his letter to others but he understands why she did it. One of his friends who he slept near is sick and in Baltimore, Maryland. The friend knew he received many letters from ladies and said that if a man wrote to his wife he would not stand it. Thanks her for writing him so many "friendly" letters. States that he may not be able to write her for some time. Writes that Mary's sister Laura will write to him as well. Tells her the truth that he does not drink his ration of whiskey.
