Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Writes to his wife and children. Scolds his wife, "I didn't think that I was writing to two wives before but you had to go up and show Abby the letters I shall have to be carfull what I write here after if that is the way for I say things some times that wont do to go away from home..." Discusses the potential sale of their property. Tells her, "I think if he hant bought it yet that if he wants it bad enough to give one thousand dollars for it...if you think that you can do better sell it in well come and I will say good for you for I dont expect to be good for much if I ever get home and I expect that you will do the business here after and I shall look on and play gentleman or soldier just as you like it." Signs letter, "yours in love but no money."

Abram Bogart enlisted on 15 August 1862 at Sidney, New York as a Private. He was mustered into "I" Co. NY 144th Infantry. He was transferred from "I" Co. into "K" Co. on 16 October 1862. He was mustered out on 25 June 1865 at Hilton Head, South Carolina.
