Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Document titled, "Order of Piquet Guard." Lists 15 rules such as, "3. Contraband Negroes not allowed inside lines. 4. Wagons must not go beyond Stations for wood." The document is unsigned, however on the back there is a note written in pencil by Elhanan M. Mast, Lieutenant Colonel, to Captain T. B. Van Horn from Stones River, Tennessee. Mast discusses his command and his tent.
