Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Bope writes to his sister from camp at Bellefonte and complains of the march over the Cumberland mountains. He "fell out" of the march for the first time due to excessive heat. Comments on the "Copperheads" in Ohio. Expresses anger at a friend who joined the Copperheads.

"Copperheads" were northern Democrats more conciliatory to the South, who wore copper pennies as identifying badges.
