At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Forwarding Porter a petition to the President, and wishes Porter would forward it to the President. The petition requests the exemption of Walker's overseer from military service. Most likely written while Walker was Secretary of State, between 17 September 1861 and 31 March 1862.

Leroy P. Walker was the first Confederate Secretary of State, and later a Confederate General.
