Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Writes about his financial transactions. States he will send $300 at the end of the month. Remarks that he is glad John has sold his land agreeably and states that he hopes to return to his Cambridge, Massachusetts home someday. On stationery from the National Military Asylum, Southern Branch.

Hincks was a Union General and Commander of Camp Lookout prison April - May 1864. He led a Negro division in the Petersburg siege. He also served on court martial and recruiting duties intermittently. Nichols was a Cambridge Massachusetts Commission merchant.
