Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Responds to a previous letter from Deming, Mayor of Hartford, Connecticut, in which Deming requested a donation to honor Alfred Edmund Burr, Chairman of the Democratic State Central Committee. Expresses enthusiasm in providing a testimonial for Burr "for the great personal sacrifice he has made in behalf of our great National party, he has labored both in season, and out of season, with a self sacrificing zeal for the good of our party and Country ... " English served as a U.S. congressman (1861-1864) and senator (1875-1876), and as governor of Connecticut (1867-1869 and 1870-1871). Deming was mayor of Hartford (1854-1858 and 1860-1862

English served as a United States Representative from Connecticut 1861-1864, as Governor of Connecticut 1867-1869 and 1870-1871, and as Senator 1875-1876. Deming served as Mayor of Hartford 1854-1858 and 1860-1862. Burr founded The Hartford Times, a Connecticut newspaper.
