Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Surgeon steward Tittle details the "Kearsarge's" 1862-1864 cruise, including her engagement with the CSS "Alabama." The USS "Kearsarge" eventually fought and sank the Confederate raider off the French coast on 19 June 1864. 19 letters divided into 2 folders.
