At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Dear Sir.

I take the liberty of troubling you with a commission. The enclosed in a Catalogue of Books to be Sold at Auction at Philadelphia on Tuesday. I have marked with a pencil a large number of them, which I Shall be glad to have, if they Should go off at moderate prices Say less than half their cost new at the Booksellers..
I wish not to exceed in any case that limit. Will you have the goodness to employ some person to bid for them without using my name, but as for himself and to take such of them as well sell within above times and others. The terms of Sale are not mentioned, but whatever the amount may be of those purchased for me I will [illegible] to you, immediately the [illegible] may be shipped to me, by the just coasting vessel
