At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Orders Haskell and his troops to rendezvous with Gibbon and his men inside Washington. Dated to 9:30 PM. Signed as Brigadier General. Also mentions Sixth Wisconsin and General Hooker. Day and month given, but no year. Written some time between 1861 and 1863, most likely 1861.

John Gibbon was a Union Major General of Volunteers.
Frank A. Haskell was a Union Lieutenant, later promoted to Colonel.
