Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Cobb discusses an order from Mr. Burch and mentions A. Kennan, who Cobb encouraged to fill the position of auditor in Athens. Says "...have the auditing ex-parte- & leave to Thomas to enforce it-which I know he will- In such event is it not better policy for you to have no counsel present..."

Cobb served as a Confederate general in the Civil War.
