Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Signed by Thomas McGregor, the Town Clerk, as a witness. Results from a legal meeting held in Waldoborough, Maine regarding the settlers land claims likely in Broad Bay (present day Waldoboro, Maine). The members selected Committee members and gave full power to the Committee to act as a mediator between Henry Knox and the settlers. Note at top of letter states John Fitzgerald is the moderator. Letter is almost a duplicate of GLC02437.07681.
