Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Contains three items. The first, labeled "From the Centinel- April 27th, 1796," is an obituary for two of Knox's children, Augusta Henrietta and Marcus Bingham. The second, from 24 January 1798, is an obituary for Knox's fourteen-year-old daughter, Julia Wadsworth. The last, labeled "From the Centinel, Jany 31st 1798," is a poem about the loss of Julia Wadsworth.
