At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Copy of a letter from Major General Charles Scott to the Secretary of War, Henry Knox. Informs Knox the rear of his command passed the Ohio [River?] this morning. Requests Knox makes all the necessary arrangements prior to their arrival so they are able to take to the field without delay. Mentions he fell short on the number of recruitments but the skill of the men compensates for any deficiencies. Also notes everyone gets along well. Written from Fort Washington, present day Cincinnati, Ohio.
