Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

May be missing its beginning page(s). Discusses a proposal apparently geared to help Shaw and [Thomas] Randall avoid debt if "the Jay" (likely a ship) does not arrive according to plan. Mentions that he will likely not be able to write again before Shaw's departure, so he wishes Shaw a good voyage and safe trip home.
