Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Discusses arrangements made in light of the Congressional resolve to discharge most of the Continental troops. Writes, "General Knox cannot take leave of this remnant of the Continental Army without expressing his ardent wishes for their future prosperity, and his firm confidence that their conduct as citizens, will be as good and amiable as their characters as soldiers have been illustrious and honorable."
