At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Pickering, Quartermaster General, asks Knox to write an official request to justify the allowance Pickering granted for the transportation of discharged officers' baggage (after they were discharged, many officers had difficulty traveling home). In a post script, suggests Knox assigns an earlier date to his official certificate.

Dr Sir,
I forgot to request your certificate of the propriety and necessity of making to the officers discharged so liberal an allowance for the transportation of their baggage. I will thank you to do it in a letter, or in such form as you judge best, to justify the measure.
