Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Returns a copy of the Nautical Almanac for 1774 because it is missing pages containing calculations of the eclipses of Jupiter's satellites for the month of May. He wishes to exchange it for a complete one. Oliver one of the founders of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and a member of the American Philosophical Society. He published an "Essay on Comets" the previous year.
