Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Possibly a telegram to General Eliakim P. Scammon. Colonel White reports that some deserters have come in and that there is a small battalion at Princeton, West Virginia. He will send more information as he gets it. White, a Union Brevet Brigadier General, was with the Ohio 12th Infantry.
