At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

My dear Mother,
I have no doubt that you are much surprised to hear that I am back again. I was captured on the 13th so was Billy Webster on the VA central railroad bu Gen. Sheridan. I was on furlough at the time. Did you get a letter from me by way of truce. I saw Burton he was looking quite well. Eugene Raphel was taken at the same time. I wrote to you from Fortress Monroe, where I stayed a week previous to coming here. Please send me some money soon as I am in want. Best love to Father, Uncle George, Uncle John & family & all the rest & believe me as ever, Your fond son.
