The bearer, Mrs. Frances Wynn, refuses to join her deserter husband, who joined the "Yankee fleet," despite his severe threats. She and her child are destitute and "should be cared for for her faithful adherence to our cause." Burras knows her, and asks Wortham to assist her, as well as her child and her sister.

George Wortham was a Confederate officer, who served as a Captain in the Twelfth North Carolina Infantry and later Colonel in the Fiftieth North Carolina Infantry.
