Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

re: Dodge asks Kinney to "send me a shirt by mail" made of blue flannel. He also describes the two battles in which he fought: the Seven Days Battles [June 25-July 1, 1862] and the Second Battle of Bull run [August 1862]. The fight at Malvern Hill on the seventh day of the Seven Days Battles [July 1, 1862] clearly affected Dodge. He writes, "the field was all covered with dead…that night the wounded cride for help, but we could not help them."
