Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Written from camp near Manassas Junction. Complains that the mail has been slow. Reports that a mutual acquaintance, Jacob Stouffer, was taken prisoner during their last march. Discusses another corps's perception of the Pennsylvania Reserves, mentions General George G. Meade, and mentions a runaway soldier who has returned to the company.
