Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Written at Camp Pierpont to his wife. Fears he will not be able to return home until spring, and longs to see his wife and son. Writes, "...perhaps this delay may save the life of many a soldier for we have seen the effects of attacking the Rebels half prepared at Bull Run and Balls Bluff... our Brigade never moves unless there is a strong force..."
