Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Writes that he is glad Cheney is regaining his health. Comments on the upcoming presidential election and the Civil War: "The good news must stimulate you. Of the result, political or military I cannot doubt. Mr. Lincoln will be re-elected, & Rebellion will be crushed -& with it Slavery which is nothing but another name for the Rebellion."

Cheney, a historian, wrote Illustrations of the Ancient Monuments of Western New York, among several other works.
