At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Souvenir document presented by Grant to loyal supporter and fellow Galena townsman, Elihu B. Washburne, who served as Secretary of State and Ambassador to France during Grant's presidency. Informs that Lee surrendered the Army of Northern Virginia on the previous day. Recipient inferred from provenance. Possibly Grant's retained copy of the telegram.

Washburne was a congressman and a loyal supporter of Grant.

Gen. R. E. Lee surrendered the Army of N. Va. at Appomattox C.H. Va. on yesterday.
The force surrendered was the remnant left from an Army of about 70,000 men who defended Richmond ten days ago.
