Retained legal brief concerning a case in the amount of $108.31. Taney signed as an attorney. On verso is a note also signed by Taney requesting that Mr. Ritchie (possibly his secretary or clerk) file this brief and send a copy to the courthouse.
At this time, Taney was a lawyer practicing in Maryland. Taney was appointed Attorney General of Maryland in 1827, and then became President Andrew Jackson's Attorney General in 1831. He served as Chief Justice of the United States Supreme Court from 1836 until his death in 1864.
