Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Details the Lovett family accounts. Most are lists of sundry goods brought to Lovett by ship and their costs. Mentions the names of many ships, their sailing dates, and their captains. The dates run backwards with the earliest at the end of the book. The pages of the first half of the ledger book have been cut out. A few other pages are fragments. Lovett was a privateer ship merchant and captain in Beverly, Massachusetts.
