At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Published by Sherwood & Co. Address delivered before the Maryland State Legislature at Annapolis 22 January 1864. States that the duty of the country is to suppress the rebellion and eliminate slavery. Encourages the unification of all parties to back President Lincoln's plan of pacification. Declares that "slavery, as a great element of society, makes slaves of all associated with it."
