Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Signed by Ellsworth as member of Connecticut Pay-table Committee. To John Lawrence as Treasurer of Connecticut and co-signed by committee member Thomas Seymour. Receipt for Cyprian Collins for four pounds, four shillings for riding express from the Northern Army to Governor John Trumbull. Countersigned on verso by Cyprian Collins that he received the money. Also countersigned by E. Plummer, who audited the payment on 1 September 1777.

Seymour was later first mayor of Hartford, Connecticut and served 1774-1812.
