Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Published by Sandoz and William H. Spencer (fl. 1862). Published in English pages 1-2 and French, as "Courrier des Opelousas," pages 3-4. Mostly advertisements. Includes call to arms of the St. Landry Cavalry Regiment and an address by Governor Moore: "A call has been made upon me by Gen. Beauregard for 5,000 men to defend the Mississippi River" (Battle of Shiloh). Printed on orange paper.

In English, The Opelousas courier, published, 1852-1910, with some issues printed on wallpaper from 1862-1864. French title: Le Courrier des Opelousas. Before 1852, the Opelousas Courier was titled The Opelousas Gazette, and was published by Sandoz and George Addison.
