At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Writes to his wife about the ill health of their son. Mentions that "Commodore Tattnall is here & I am to report to him tomorrow: Morris' Steamer the Huntress has arrived."

Commodore Josiah Tattnall became the senior flag officer of the Navy of Georgia in February 1861 after his resignation from the United States Navy. Tattnall had come to Savannah to examine the Huntress and the Savannah, two ships recently secured for the Georgia Navy.
