Universal Negro Improvement Association founded
Marcus Garvey founded the Universal Negro Improvement Association in Jamaica. The organization became influential in the United States when Garvey moved to Harlem in 1916.

Universal Negro Improvement Association
The United Negro Improvement Association (UNIA) was founded in 1914 by Marcus Garvey, a black nationalist movement leader. The UNIA advocated black pride, self-sufficiency, and a black separatist movement. The UNIA clashed with more moderate organizations like the NAACP, which emphasized integration and equality at home rather than the creation of a separate black state abroad.

Marcus Garvey
Marcus Garvey (1887–1940) was a Jamaican leader who organized the first major black nationalist movement in America. In Jamaica, Garvey founded the Universal Negro Improvement Association (UNIA), and in 1916 he traveled to the United States to establish UNIA branches in Harlem and other urban centers. Garvey promoted black pride and self-sufficiency, but some of his ideas, such as self-segregation, were vehemently opposed by other black leaders, including W.E.B. Du Bois of the NAACP.
