New York, New York — The Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History is pleased to announce a partnership with Adams State University that presents a unique opportunity to earn a master’s degree online. In the newly created Gilder Lehrman M.A. in American History from Adams State University, participants will be able to pursue an accredited master’s degree directly through online courses offered by Gilder Lehrman.
Gilder Lehrman’s online courses, covering topics ranging from the colonial era to the present day, provide teachers, librarians, park rangers, history enthusiasts, and others with an expert-led, in-depth exploration of a defining topic in American history. Each course blends a traditional liberal arts environment with features that can only be found online, combining first-rate scholars and small class sizes with virtual field trips, interactive discussions, and the extensive use of digital history tools.
Enrollment in the online M.A. program is easy: participants simply complete a free registration form with Adams State upon signing up for a Gilder Lehrman online course. Graduate students will earn their degree by completing nine Gilder Lehrman online courses and writing and defending a thesis on the Adams State campus in Colorado. Online graduate courses will be offered in the spring, summer, and fall; a weeklong Gilder Lehrman Teacher Seminar, run in the summer, can be substituted for one online course.
In addition to providing a top-notch education, Gilder Lehrman and Adams State are committed to offering a program that fits schedules as well as budgets. Participants can take as many years as they need to complete the program, and at a cost of $600 per course, enrollees can earn an M.A. for less than $6,000!
The online courses on offer this fall are Allen C. Guelzo’s The American Civil War and James G. Basker’s Amazing Grace: How Writers Helped End Slavery. Guelzo, Director of Civil War Era Studies at Gettysburg College, will present a study of Civil War strategy and tactics and consider the legacy of the Civil War 150 years after its end. Basker, Professor of Literary History at Barnard College, will examine the 300-year history of poetry and literature that helped end American slavery and make human rights an expectation of people around the world.
In both fall courses, attendees will hear lectures by the professor as well as featured guests, take part in real-time seminars, and receive copies of the course texts. Participants can enroll in any or all of the courses they choose. The spring courses on offer are The South in American History, with University of Richmond President Edward L. Ayers, and The Global Cold War, with University of Texas Professor Jeremi Suri.
To ensure that anyone can take advantage of Gilder Lehrman’s online courses, auditors may watch session recordings and pursue a Continuing Education Certificate of Completion for $25. Teachers from Gilder Lehrman Affiliate Schools may audit for just $15. In addition, Gilder Lehrman will offer five full scholarships each year to Affiliate School teachers, which will cover the full cost of registration for one course.
